There was really a Fidel Reyes who existed in Philippine history. The Lipeño Don Fidel Reyes y Malabanan (1878-1967) was a giant of the Philippine Press during the early 20th century, having authored the feisty and controversial editorial "Aves de Rapiña" (Birds of Prey) in the newspaper "El Renacimiento", which exposed the corruption of the American colonial government. Called to public service, Fidel became a member of the Philippine Legislature, representing the Third District of Batangas in 1912, and in 1918 was appointed the First Filipino Director of the Bureau of Commerce and Industry. As a philanthropist, he donated land to the first SOS Children's Village in the Philippines.
Filipino showmanship, culture, and fashion were elevated at the 1931 Paris Colonial Exposition. An illustrious son of Lipa, Arsenio Katigbak Luz, led the Philippine delegation to this international expo.
While the Lipeños celebrated their town fiesta on January 20, 1937, they also mourned the loss of their former town leader, Don Valerio Kalaw. The Lipa Municipal Council's resolution, dated January 21, 1937, highlights the precious legacy that Sr. Kalaw left.
